Basque Hotel Recipes You Have to Try
I’ve been having a lot of fun this summer leading Basque walking tours of San Francisco. When I was in the research and development stages for this tour I had a lot of help from Ana Iriartborde. Ana was an invaluable resource because she and her husband Ganix used to run the Des Alpes Basque hotel and restaurant in San Francisco. She was kind enough to share with me a few of her recipes from the Des Alpes years. She even gave me permission to share them all with you, so I hope you enjoy them!

What Ever Happened to Garrett Yrigoyen? (The Basque Guy From The Bachelorette)
I don’t know about you, but The Bachelorette has taken over the family room TV on Monday nights at my house this summer. This season’s Bachelorette is about to pick her man tonight, and it’s got me nostalgic for last year’s season of The Bachelorette. Members of the Basque American community and Bachelor Nation already know that last season the competition’s only Basque American contestant, Garrett Yrigoyen, won the Bachelorette’s heart.

Picon Punch: Basque America’s Favorite Cocktail
I’ve been getting some questions about the Picon Punch on the Basque walking tour of San Francisco. It seems like many of us are curious about the Picon Punch but also mystified as to what it actually is. So today let’s talk about this favorite Basque American cocktail.
Baztandarren Biltzarra: The Quintessential Basque Festival of Baztan
Baztandarren Biltzarra takes place in Elizondo but it’s a celebration of all the towns in the valley of Baztan. Since 1964, the 15 villages of the valley come together to put on an annual parade through the streets of Elizondo, full of traditional costumes, music, and dancing. The parade may look like a beautiful display of traditional Basque culture to outsiders like me, but it’s actually a competition between the villages.
When I moved away for college, I left behind my Basque American community and felt very disconnected from my Basque identity. An isolation I imagine many in the diaspora may feel at one point or another.
My hope is that Hella Basque can help Basques in the diaspora feel more connected to their heritage, whether or not they have physical ties to a Basque community.
